Introduction

A recent report undertaken on cybercrime in law firms revealed that law firm employee passwords are widely available on the Dark Web.

Out of 5,140 firms which were audited, 72% had at least one instance where employees’ usernames and passwords were shown to be on lists on the Dark Web. Criminals could potentially use these details to access our firm’s IT systems and do untold damage.

Only 1 in 7 firms have the government’s Cyber Essentials certificate which is recommended as part of the Lexcel accreditation and is a requirement for all public sector case work.

On 1 June 2023 the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) released their updated report on cybercrime in UK law firms. First released in 2018, this report looks at the key issues faced in the legal sector with links to guidance and information, helping to ensure your law firm and employees can maintain and improve their cyber security.

From the SRA thematic review undertaken on cybercrime, 60% of the firms visited felt that the biggest threat in their firm was linked to the knowledge and behaviour of staff. Cybercrime training is a must!

This new virtual classroom seminar will take a closer look at the report and explore the types of cyberattacks criminals use to target law firms, and will offer guidance on how to defend yourselves.

This session includes practical case studies and will discuss the latest guidance from the SRA and NCSC.
