Human Rights Due Diligence - Key Insights for Lawyers & Compliance Officers
Introduction
In August 2024, the American Bar Association released a resolution urging legal professionals to abstain from causing or contributing to adverse human rights impacts when representing corporate clients.
This resolution draws upon the IBA’s updated 2023 guide for the corporate bar on business and human rights.
Both bar associations advocate for legal practitioners to ascertain whether their corporate clients are likely to utilise their legal counsel and services to perpetrate human rights violations.
Lawyers and general counsel are increasingly being asked to provide advice to businesses and clients on how to mitigate human rights risks and avoid the potential damage to their reputation and finances associated with human rights violations.
To accomplish this, legal professionals must understand the intersection between business and human rights and enhance their knowledge in areas such as human rights due diligence and disclosures.
This short webinar will offer legal professionals key insights into the concept of human rights due diligence and provide an overview of the evolving regulatory framework and the role of lawyers in this context.
