Introduction

Since April 2015, employees have been able to share up to 37 weeks of ‘unused’ maternity and adoption leave and 50 weeks of pay. This includes children born through surrogacy arrangements. The intention of the Shared Parental Leave (SPL) and Pay (ShPP) regime is to allow parents or adopters more choice in how they will care for the child in the first year or birth or placement. For employees, this is welcome work-life balance flexibility - for employers there is the perception of complexity.

Despite the the UK Government consulting on proposals to make the shared scheme less confusing and less complex for employee and employers back in 2018, no changes to the statutory leave and pay entitlement have been made to date. Therefore, employers are still required to understand the rules which they will need to translate into workplace policies and procedures.

Given there are no plans for reform, this webinar outlines the practical implications of the sharing of maternity / adoption / surrogacy leave and pay. This will dispel the impression that it is complicated and give you confidence in administering this statutory entitlement. It will also provide links to updated guidance.
