Introduction

This new virtual classroom seminar is suitable for lawyers and contract specialists dealing with all manner of shipbuilding and offshore construction projects.

Such projects are broad in nature and include:

  • The construction of trading vessels, including specialist commercial vessels such as LNG carriers
  • The construction of passenger ferries, cruise ships, and yachts
  • The construction of specialist offshore units and support vessels
  • Ship conversion projects
  • The construction of equipment and infrastructure related to offshore oil and gas and renewable projects

The session will provide you with an understanding of the legal and practical issues that arise in the context of these projects.

The session will also highlight differences between contract wording and practices found in the more conventional sectors (such as for trading vessels and passenger ships) and those which have developed in the offshore energy (oil and gas and renewables) sector.

Many of such projects are undertaken using contracts based on the ‘SAJ form’ or BIMCO’s 2007 ‘Newbuildcon’ form of contract. Both contracts are considered as part of the session.
