Introduction

Whilst oral advocacy is important, more and more often advocates are asked to put submissions and legal arguments into writing to enable courts to have advance notice of points to be raised.

There are some requirements under the criminal procedure rules when drafting, but written arguments are an art, rather than a science. Despite this, there are some rules which you should seek to follow.

This virtual classroom seminar is designed to give you food for thought about ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ when drafting legal arguments.

This live session will assist in making your written advocacy punchy, pithy and persuasive.

What You Will Learn

This live broadcast will cover the following:

  • How should I structure my legal argument/submissions?
  • What should I say in my submissions and what shouldn’t I say in my submissions?
  • How to blend the law with the facts
  • Abuse of process applications
  • Applications to exclude evidence
  • Advice on appeal - which may be submitted to the Court of Appeal Criminal Division
  • Legal arguments generally

Recording of live sessions: Soon after the Learn Live session has taken place you will be able to go back and access the recording - should you wish to revisit the material discussed.
