Introduction

Since the watershed Supreme Court case on nationality deprivation involving Shamima Begum in 2021, Ms Begum’s deprivation appeal has now been heard and dismissed by Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC) in February 2023.

The Secretary of State for the Home Department (SSHD) has continued its trend in recent years to use deprivation powers in an increasing number of cases.

Presented by immigration expert Lucy Mair, this webinar will provide practitioners with an invaluable update on key developments in this area.

What You Will Learn

This webinar will cover the following:

  • Recent trends in the use of nullity and deprivation powers by the Home Office
  • Review of recent Home Office policy guidance documents published in May 2023 - one on Deprivation of British Citizenship and one on Nullity of British Citizenship
  • Summary of recent case law developments in the two main areas of nationality deprivation - behaviour-based and fraud-based
  • Looking at a couple of recent case studies from counsel on deprivation appeals in the First-tier Tribunal including tactics for success

This webinar was recorded on 23rd October 2023
