Statutory Neonatal Leave & Pay - What Employers Need to Know from April 2025
Introduction
From April 2025, employers must comply with the new statutory entitlement for Statutory Neonatal Care Leave and Pay (SNCL and P). This new entitlement is in addition to the existing child-related benefits such as maternity, paternity, and adoption leave and pay.
The Neonatal Care (Leave and Pay) Act 2023, which received Royal Assent in May 2023, grants qualifying parents the right to 12 weeks of leave and pay if their newborn requires neonatal care within the first 28 days of life. The legislation will be implemented through regulations in 2024 and 2025, updating both employment law (leave) and social security law (pay).
With Statutory Neonatal Leave and Pay being a major new entitlement, it is crucial to understand its nuances and integrate them into your company policies, as well as update payroll and HR systems accordingly.
